Applicable to students admitted in 2012-13

3-Year Curriculum

Major Programme

S7 students

Students are required to complete a minimum of 63 units of courses as follows :

(i)

Required Courses:

33 units

ECON1101, 1111, 1131, 2011*, 2021*, 2121, 2311, 2901, 3011, 3021, 3121, 4901 and 4902

(ii)

30 units of elective courses in Economics at 3000 or above level@.

30 units

Major students are allowed to take courses from our graduate programme subject to the consent of course instructor. The units and grades earned are counted towards the Major elective requirement.

Total:

63 units

Not to be included in the Major GPA.

Among these 30 units of elective courses, students may choose 1) not to specialize in any concentration area, or 2) specialize in a maximum of two concentration areas, but the courses taken in the two areas should not be double counted. Students have to take at least 15 units in each area. Besides the subjects listed below, the Department may approve the inclusion of relevant special topics courses or graduate courses

Students may declare a concentration i) after the requisite courses for a concentration have been completed, or ii) in the same term that the requisite courses for a concentration are expected to be completed. Upon completion of all requisite courses for a concentration, the said concentration will be indicated in the academic transcript.

To be included in the Major GPA. Units counted towards the fulfilment of the Economics Major Programme requirements shall not be counted towards the fulfilment of the Minor Programmes in Mathematics or Statistics, and vice versa. Economics Majors minoring in MATH or STAT are required to declare which MATH or STAT courses will be counted towards requirements of the Major Programme at their final term of attendance. Economics Majors not minoring in MATH or STAT but have passed such courses are also allowed to choose to declare up to a maximum of 3 units, if they have fulfilled their 9 units of ECON elective courses.

If ECON3340 is not taken as a required course, it can be taken as an elective course.

If ECON3460 is not taken as a required course, it can be taken as an elective course.

Course Exemption

(i)

Economics Majors who have obtained a grade “E” or above in “Principles of Accounts” in the HKALE or equivalent may choose to apply for exemption of ECON1131. The Major unit requirement will be reduced by 3 units.

(ii)

Economics Majors who have obtained a grade “E” or above in “Pure Mathematics” in the HKALE or equivalent may choose to apply for exemption of ECON1101. The Major unit requirement will be reduced by 2 units.

Course Restrictions

Equivalent Courses

(i)

All Economics Majors are not allowed to take the following courses in Column B listed as equivalent to ECON2121 unless such courses are required by the students’ Minor Programmes.

(ii)

Economics Majors would be exempted from taking ECON2121 if they have passed any of the listed equivalent courses in Column B. The minimum Major Programme unit requirements will reduce 3 units. However, equivalent courses in Column B will not be included in the Major GPA calculation.

(iii)

If Economics Majors take both the ECON courses and the corresponding equivalent courses, the units of the equivalent courses will not be counted towards the requirements for graduation unless such courses are required by the student’s Minor Programmes.

(iv)

If transfer students have taken the courses in Columns A and B before transferring to the Economics Programme, units of both courses in Columns A and B will be counted towards the requirements for graduation.

(i)

Minor Programme

(i)

A student whose Major field is in the Programme of IBBA, IFAA, PACC, QFIN and QFRM, and who wishes to minor in Economics is required to complete a minimum of 15 units of Economics courses selected from ECON2311 or courses at 3000 or above level.

(iii)

RMSC Majors who wish to minor in Economics can be exempted from taking ECON2011 if they have passed DSME1030. However, they are still required to complete a minimum of 18 units of economics courses including ECON2021 and 15 units of other courses selected from ECON2311 or courses at 3000 or above level.

[a]	Students who have obtained grade 3 or above in both the compulsory part and Module 1 (Calculus and Statistics) of the HKDSE Mathematics examination may, upon application, be exempted from ECON1101, in which case the Major Programme Requirement will be reduced by 2 units. Students who have obtained grade 3 or above in both the compulsory part and Module 2 (Algebra and Calculus) of the HKDSE Mathematics examination are not required to take ECON1101. The Major Programme Requirement for these students will be reduced by 2 units.
[b]	Students who have obtained grade 3 or above in the “Business, Accounting and Financial Studies” subject of HKDSE may, upon application, be exempted from ECON1141, in which case the Major Programme Requirement will be reduced by 2 units.

For students taking two concentration areas, the courses must not overlap and count towards both concentration areas. In addition to the courses listed above, the Department may approve the inclusion of relevant special topics courses or courses at 5000 or above level in the concentration areas.

Explanatory Notes:
1.	ECON courses at 2000 and above level will be included in the calculation of Major GPA for honours classification.
[a]	Students with associate degrees depending on their academic background are advised to take additional foundation courses beyond 8 units required as appropriate.
[b]	Students are allowed to take ECON courses at 5000 or above level to fulfill the Elective Courses requirement, subject to the consent of the course instructor.
[c]	Students may declare a concentration area (i) after the requisite courses for the concentration area have been completed, or (ii) in the same term that the requisite courses are expected to be completed. Upon completion of all requisite courses for a concentration area, such concentration area will be indicated on academic transcripts.
[d]	Students are required to declare which MATH or STAT course is to be counted towards the requirement of the Advanced Economics concentration area at their final term of attendance.
