Michael earned his PhD in Economics from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, in 1997 and has been a faculty member at The Chinese University of Hong Kong since 1996. Throughout his career, he has taught across multiple faculties, including the Economics Department, Business School, and Medical School. From 2003 to 2011, he served as a professional consultant within the School of Public Health and Primary Care and contributed as a research consultant to the Food and Health Bureau of the HKSAR government, supporting studies on health policies and healthcare financing reform. Additionally, he has taught a variety of economics courses at both introductory and advanced levels for the MBA, MSc Public Health, and MSc Economics programs.

His collaborative consultancy and publications span diverse fields such as health economics, game theory, macroeconomics, and health policy research, alongside projects in the aviation and education sectors. Since 2013, he has concentrated on supporting postgraduate students through tutorial sessions for MSc Economics candidates.
